Steve Kerr shares insights on ICE following consecutive games in Minnesota

Warriors Split Weekend Series in Minneapolis

The Golden State Warriors were in Minneapolis over the weekend for two games against the Minnesota Timberwolves, splitting the series.

The first game was pushed from Saturday to Sunday due to the tragic shooting of Alex Preti, a 37-year-old, by a Border Patrol agent. The NBA made this decision citing concerns for the “safety and security of the Minneapolis community.”

This incident marks the second time this month that immigration authorities have been involved in a shooting in the city, with the earlier death of another 37-year-old, Renee Good.

Coach Steve Kerr described Good’s death as “murder” earlier this month. Following the second game against the Timberwolves, he remarked on the tense atmosphere, saying it had been a “really strange few days” in Minnesota.

“We feel tremendous empathy for the local community, and we hope that the protests here and nationwide lead to meaningful solutions regarding immigration issues,” Kerr expressed.

He also criticized the actions taken by the Border Patrol agent, questioning their focus. “They’re not targeting violent criminals. Instead, they’re detaining innocent people, including young children and citizens. Immigration is a critical issue, but it needs to be handled by Congress, not through militarized actions on the streets,” Kerr stated.

NBA Community Responds

The Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Good and Preti during the game. Protests against ICE took place outside the arena on Sunday as well.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) issued a statement on Sunday, highlighting the urgency of the situation. “NBA players can no longer remain silent in light of another deadly shooting in Minneapolis, a place central to the fight for justice,” the statement read. “We must uphold our right to free speech and stand in solidarity with those risking their lives to demand justice.”

The NBPA further emphasized the importance of community and the need for inclusivity, extending condolences to the families of both victims, while also stressing the safety and welfare of all community members.
