Stock Market Update
On Thursday, U.S. equity futures faced declines, primarily due to drops in major companies like Meta Platforms and Tesla. This downturn has been attributed to rising concerns surrounding investments in artificial intelligence, alongside increasing oil prices amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 304 points, translating to a 0.6% decrease. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures dropped by 1%, and Nasdaq-100 futures saw a more significant decline of 1.7%.
Tesla’s shares decreased by over 3%, while Meta’s stock slipped nearly 2%. This drop is somewhat surprising as Tesla reported better-than-expected third-quarter results, although its automotive revenue was considered underwhelming. In contrast, Meta exceeded revenue forecasts but still faced a setback in its share price.
The broader technology sector also experienced pressure amidst ongoing anxieties regarding artificial intelligence spending. Advanced Micro Devices shares fell more than 4%, while Micron Technology and Nvidia saw declines of 3% and 2%, respectively.
CoreWeave, a leader in neocloud services, experienced a nearly 4% decline as well. This comes in light of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s comments that demand for neoclouds is exceptionally high. However, he has warned that limited capital is hindering growth, which seems to be unsettling the markets.
Traders at Wells Fargo noted that Huang’s remarks regarding capital scarcity have reignited concerns about risks in the credit markets. Additionally, Meta’s statements around significant AI investment needs contributed to the overall market downturn.
JPMorgan traders observed a shift in sentiment overnight, pointing out that the generally positive market tone turned sour as Meta shares slipped in premarket trading, coinciding with rising concerns about geopolitical risks following the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
On another front, oil prices surged when media reports suggested that the U.S. and Israel plan to conduct renewed strikes against Iran after next month’s elections. President Donald Trump also remarked that negotiations with Tehran are off the table, hinting at imminent developments.
Brent crude futures increased almost 3%, surpassing $111 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose by 2%, moving above $99 per barrel.
Amid these fluctuations, investors shifted their focus to U.S. Treasurys for a safer investment. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note decreased by more than 9 basis points, settling at 5.048%. The 2-year note yield also fell by 9 basis points to 4.733%.
This market reaction follows a strong performance on Wall Street, where the S&P 500 had enjoyed a three-day winning streak.
Across the Atlantic, Europe’s Stoxx 600 index was down by 1% in early trading, while France’s CAC 40 index experienced a decline of 1.34%.
In Asia, South Korea’s Kospi fell by over 1%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 saw a reduction of 0.73%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index plummeted more than 2%. Mainland China’s CSI 300 index was down 0.37% as well.
