Rise in Left-Wing Terrorism Signaled in New Study
Left-wing attacks are projected to hit a record high this year, raising concerns as Democrats are criticized for potentially fueling harmful rhetoric against the Trump administration.
A recent survey from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) reveals that left-wing incidents now account for a larger share of all terrorist activities.
Up until July 4, 2025, there have been five left-wing attacks or plots, which excludes notable events like the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the attack on the Dallas Ice Facility, according to the findings.
This figure represents a significant spike—more than eight times the average of 0.6 incidents annually recorded between 1995 and 2000.
CSIS researchers examined a dataset encompassing 750 terrorist attacks and plots in the U.S. from January 1, 1994, to July 4, 2025.
Notably, for the first time in three decades, attacks attributed to the left are outpacing those from the far right.
The CSIS report attributes the surge in leftist violence since President Trump’s entry into office in 2016 to motivations rooted in anti-government extremism or partisan bias.
“Every left-wing attack up to July 4, 2025, seems to be driven by one of these ideologies,” the report states, suggesting that the assassination of Kirk fits this trend.
Kirk’s killer, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, reportedly wrote, “Hey Fascist, catch this run,” just before the attack on September 10, according to law enforcement.
The CSIS analysis also indicates that this year’s uptick in left-wing violence is particularly connected to opposition against the Trump administration, as well as attacks on its political figures and the institutions that support its agenda.
Moreover, immigration has surfaced as a key issue this year, brought to light by a recent incident at the Ice Detention Center in Dallas.
The author of the study asserts that while political leaders aren’t to blame for extreme behavior, they do influence how extremism is addressed. There’s an urgent call for both political sides to denounce violence and strive for calm when it comes to opposing viewpoints.
“Some celebrations surrounding the actions of individuals like Luigi Mangione fail to mitigate support for leftist violence,” the study remarks.
On a related note, the study suggests that the decrease in right-wing terrorism could be linked to some extremists feeling less compelled to resort to violence when their concerns are acknowledged since Trump took office.
