Study Reveals Decrease in Biblical Beliefs Among US Churchgoers

Decline in Biblical Certainty Among U.S. Churchgoers

A recent study conducted by the Family Research Council and the Arizona Christian University Cultural Research Center highlights a notable decline in Biblical certainty among regular church attendees in the United States. This trend is particularly evident concerning family, life, and moral values.

The research, titled “Social Issues and Worldviews: A National Survey of Church-going Americans,” indicates that fewer than half of churchgoers currently view themselves as pro-life or in support of traditional family structures.

“Once-firm beliefs about family, life, and morality are being replaced by cultural influences and personal opinions. Even among people who attend church regularly, moral clarity is rapidly fading,” stated lead researcher Dr. George Barna.

Currently, only 43% of church attendees identify as “pro-life,” which is a significant drop from 63% in 2023. About 46% uphold the traditional view of marriage as being between one man and one woman, but this figure falls to just 34% among Gen Z.

Among various groups, Asians (55%), Pentecostals (56%), and born-again Christians (59%) show the strongest support for the Biblical definition of family.

The survey also revealed that approximately 51% of respondents find the Biblical stance on abortion to be straightforward and clear, a decline from 65% in 2023.

“The media blitz supporting new moral standards is clearly having a transformative impact on Americans,” Barna explained. “Perhaps the best way to counter the decline in Biblical morality is for Bible-believing Christians to become more outspoken and bold and involve their friends and family in conversations about important moral issues.”

“Unbiblical views cannot be left unchallenged. Christians must not only know what they believe and why they believe it, but also actively seek to challenge views that are not scripturally defensible.”

David Crosson, director of the FRC Center for Biblical Worldviews and co-author of the report, shared a similar perspective, emphasizing that this trend is primarily a discipleship issue rather than a political one.

“When God’s people lose moral clarity about something as basic as the sanctity of life, it indicates a deep crisis in discipleship.”

“The next generation is being catechized daily by social media, entertainment, and academia, and in many cases, they are being guided more effectively than their local church.”

This study is based on a survey of over 1,000 adults who attend Christian services at least once a month.
