Late on Monday night, an attempted beheading in North Belfast’s Kinnaird Avenue was prevented when nearby Good Samaritans and other bystanders intervened, beating back the attackers with sticks.

The victim, a civilian in his 40s, suffered “serious injuries to his face, neck, and back” and was hospitalized in critical condition, though he did manage to keep his head.

The assailant, a man in his 30s from Sudan, was initially misidentified by Northern Ireland police as Somali. He was arrested on charges of attempted murder and remains in custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson expressed that this horrific incident has shocked the local community, stating it raises significant concern. He reassured residents that authorities are taking the matter very seriously.

Henderson urged the public to refrain from sharing images or videos of the attack to avoid further traumatizing the victim.

Despite appeals from both police and immigration activist Tommy Robinson, some individuals proceeded to circulate distressing footage of the incident. This video reportedly shows a black man over a bloody victim, shouting in a foreign language before slitting the victim’s throat.

A bystander, described as a burly man, took swift action against the suspect, striking him in the head with a hammer as two others helped—one trying to secure the victim’s safety while another kicked the attacker.

In the House of Commons on Tuesday, Northern Ireland Secretary of State Hilary Benn thanked the Good Samaritan for embodying the best of humanity, expressing deep gratitude from the entire House.

Gavin Robinson, an MP for East Belfast, mentioned that the Sudanese suspect had been in the UK on a five-year visa, implying that those who exploit their residency to commit crimes should face consequences, including deportation.

Robinson also acknowledged the gravity of the situation, reinforcing a commitment to deporting anyone who abuses their right to stay in the UK by committing an offense.

British MP Rupert Lowe called the attempted beheading “sickening,” insisting that the British public deserves transparency regarding the nationality, immigration status, and religion of the assailant.

Some politicians foresee that such incidents of violence will be leveraged by the far-right to critique immigration policies, while others caution against using this horror to push personal agendas or deepen societal divides.

Colum Eastwood, an Irish politician, posited that right-wing politicians shouldn’t exploit these horrific acts for their own goals. Meanwhile, a Green Party representative warned that some individuals might use this incident to foment division and undermine community progress.

Mass protests were anticipated in Belfast on Tuesday night, with various figures calling for calm amidst rising tensions. Tommy Robinson was noted for inciting protests, making inflammatory statements against certain communities.
