Sunday shows preview: Trump conviction aftershock; Could Israel agree to a cease-fire?

This Sunday’s news programs will likely focus on the impact of former President Trump’s conviction in the hush money trial that took place in New York earlier this week.

The former president became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime after a jury found him guilty on Thursday on all charges of falsifying business records to conceal an alleged affair during the 2016 election campaign.

The former president slammed the trial immediately after the verdict was read.

“This has been a rigged and dishonorable trial. The real verdict will be given by the American people on November 5th. The American people know what happened here, everybody knows what happened here,” Trump said.

Several prominent Republicans have criticized the verdict in the case, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana). Appearing on “Fox News Sunday” this week, Johnson called it a “shameful day in American history” in a statement on Thursday.

“The American people know, of course, that this is a legal war and that it is dangerous,” he added. “President Trump will, of course, appeal this absurd ruling, and he will win.”

Appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation” this week, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R), a potential vice presidential candidate for Trump, said the guilty verdict would not deter him from potentially reshaping the Trump administration.

“I’m not hesitant because I think we all know it’s going to be very difficult to get Donald Trump a fair trial in New York,” Burgum said. “I’m not hesitant.”

President Biden on Friday announced the terms of the Israeli-led proposal, which features a three-part roadmap for an end to the fighting and the release of the remaining hostages held on October 7, a strong sign that the war between Israel and Hamas may be coming to an end.

“After intensive diplomacy by my team, many meetings with leaders of Israel, Qatar, Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries, Israel has presented a comprehensive new proposal: a road map for a lasting ceasefire and the release of all hostages,” Biden said.

Biden said the proposal had been conveyed to Hamas via Qatar, but indicated that Hamas had not yet formally accepted the plan.

“This is really a defining moment. Israel has made an offer. Hamas has said they want a ceasefire. This agreement is their opportunity to prove whether they really mean it. Hamas needs to accept the agreement,” Biden said.

White House national security and communications adviser John Kirby, who has frequently spoken to reporters about the Biden administration’s policy on Israel’s war with Hamas, is scheduled to appear on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday.
