As the US continues to encourage discussions between the two nations, peace talks involving Russia and Ukraine seem to be reaching a critical point. Key officials from America, including President Trump, have warned that if substantial progress isn’t made soon, Washington may retract its role in mediation.
Trump contended that Russian President Vladimir Putin might not actually desire peace in Eastern Europe, especially following the recent wave of strikes by the Kremlin on Ukrainian urban areas.
“There has been no justification for Putin to launch missiles at civilian areas, cities, or towns in the last few days,” Trump stated on Saturday regarding the True Society. “Perhaps he doesn’t intend to halt the conflict; he’s just attacking me, and I’m starting to believe I need to tackle this through ‘banks’ or ‘secondary sanctions.’ Too many lives are hanging by a thread!!!”
The president had a brief meeting with Ukrainian President Voldy Mirzelensky prior to the late Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome on Saturday.
Trump followed up with Zelensky on Friday, indicating in a Time Magazine interview that the Ukrainian leader was instrumental in the mineral agreement with the US.
Zelensky is set to appear on ABC’s “This Week” to discuss the meeting in Rome and Ukraine’s forthcoming steps toward a peace agreement.
On Capitol Hill, Congress members are returning to Washington on Monday after a hiatus, continuing their efforts to advance Trump’s legislative agenda.
House Republicans are set to vote on the presidential package that incorporates a $9.3 billion cut already sanctioned by Congress. Reports have emerged from multiple sources acquainted with the matter.
Lawmakers also plan to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts while augmenting funding for defense and border security through the settlement process. Several lawmakers, including Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Reps. Jason Smith (R-Mo.) and Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), are scheduled to appear on Sunday’s program.
Earlier this week, a federal judge ruled that the administration had instructed the VOA parent organization Global Media (USAGM) to reinstate international broadcasting stations and classify these outlets as “consistently reliable and authoritative” news sources.
Kari Lake, a senior advisor at USAGM, is expected to appear on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, potentially discussing how VoA reacts to its parent company’s ruling.
