Super Bowl 60: Controversy over the Black national anthem ignites anger on social media

Coco Jones Performs Black National Anthem at Super Bowl LX

Coco Jones took the stage on Sunday to perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing” ahead of Super Bowl LX, featuring the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

This song, often referred to as the Black National Anthem, has stirred quite the conversation among NFL fans ever since it was introduced during the 2020 season. The performances of the anthem during the Super Bowl have become particularly popular topics on social media.

At Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, Jones’ rendition was heard as fans began arriving for the game. Her performance opened the pregame festivities before Green Day took their turn to honor the MVPs of past Super Bowls.

While her singing received significant praise, it seems the NFL’s ongoing use of the anthem continues to spark criticism among some viewers.

Despite being a well-known singer-songwriter and actress, recognized for her roles in “Bel-Air” and “The Voice,” Jones recently released her debut studio album, “Why Not More?”, on April 25th.

The NFL began incorporating “Lift Every Voice and Sing” following the tragic death of George Floyd, which ignited a powerful movement against racial injustice across the country.

Interestingly, the NAACP has been advocating for this song as the Black National Anthem since 1917.

Brandi Carlile is set to perform “America the Beautiful,” while Charlie Puth will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the event. It all just adds to the layers of emotion and anticipation surrounding the Super Bowl festivities.
