Supreme Court Approves Trump's Administration's Reductions to Federal Employment

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to proceed with reducing the federal workforce as a means of government downsizing.

In an 8-1 ruling, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was the sole dissent, with the court clarifying that it did not make a determination on the legality of any specific reorganization plans.

In addition, the Supreme Court stated that US District Judge Susan Ilston’s decision to issue an injunction against the administration’s plan to lay off thousands of federal employees was “incorrect.” USA TODAY reported.

Attorneys representing various “unions, nonprofits, and local government groups” argued that permitting mass layoffs would create a situation that would be impossible to rectify.

This ruling from the Supreme Court came after Judge Ilston had previously called for a halt to the Trump administration’s efforts to cut the workforce, stating that such actions posed an immediate risk to essential services. New York Times reported.

It’s important to note that Congress has laid out a specific procedure for federal reorganization. Those challenging the layoffs contend that the president lacks the authority to make such decisions without congressional approval.

Judge Ilston emphasized that collaboration with Congress is necessary when considering plans that involve eliminating or relocating federal employees.

As previously noted by Breitbart News, the Trump administration has either let go of or retained employees from the United States Organization for International Development (USAID). There has also been movement within the Department of Defense to facilitate the acquisition of thousands of workers from the private sector to fill roles.

These workforce reductions coincide with President Donald Trump’s issuance of a February executive order instructing agency heads to prepare for significant layoffs, referred to as “forced large scale reductions (RIFs).”

“In line with the Presidential Memorandum of Understanding from January 20, 2025 (Heritage Freeze), agency directors must submit plans aimed at reducing the federal workforce by enhancing efficiency and utilizing attrition,” Trump stated. “Each agency should aim to employ one individual for every four positions that are vacated, consistent with the plan’s guidelines.”
