Supreme Court Blocks Trump Administration from Disbursing Controversial DEI Education Grants!

The Supreme Court intervened on Friday, halting a mandate that required the Trump administration to allocate millions for teacher training grants.

In a narrow 5-4 ruling, the justices placed a pause on a temporary ruling from a lower court that barred the government from nullifying grants aimed at minimizing programs linked to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

The court stated that the lawsuit “does not counter government officials.”

Appointed by Biden, US District Judge Myong Joun had issued a March 10 ruling that blocked the Department of Education (DOE) from proceeding with the grant cancellations. (Related: Trump administration requests the Supreme Court to prevent deportations of gang members)

Supreme Court Justice John Roberts would have rejected the government’s requests, according to the order.

“The court’s approval of this emergency application is erroneous,” Judge Elena Kagan articulated in her dissent. “The government will not honor the legality intended to revoke these contentious education grants.”

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, in her dissent, supported by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, noted that “the majority of judicial participants who regard the government’s plea as an emergency are misguided.” She argued that the government’s assertion of lacking authority from lower courts is a diversion from the “central issues” of the matter.

“Children, pets, and magicians might find this clever use of shiny tactics amusing,” she remarked. “However, the court should not be so easily sidetracked.”
