Supreme Court Permits Trump Administration to Resume White House Ballroom Construction
On Friday, Chief Justice John Roberts allowed the Trump administration to proceed with the construction of the White House ballroom.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation had previously filed a lawsuit aimed at halting the project, arguing that it breached environmental regulations and other building restrictions set in the nation’s capital.
Roberts temporarily lifted an injunction imposed by the D.C. District Court, thus enabling construction to move forward, though he indicated that further orders from either himself or the Court would be forthcoming regarding the situation.
It’s important to note that the Chief Justice did not express any views on the legal validity of the construction itself.
President Trump has claimed the ballroom is crucial for security, particularly following an assassination attempt during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last April.
Solicitor General D. John Sauer emphasized the ballroom’s necessity for national security in his appeal to the justices, labeling the injunction as “extraordinary and unlawful.” He urged that lifting the injunction was essential for the president’s safety, as well as for maintaining government continuity and the separation of powers.
Initially, the administration had asserted that the ballroom project’s projected costs of $400 million would be entirely funded through private donations. However, this figure has since escalated to at least $600 million, leading the administration to seek public funding as well.
Approximately $352 million in taxpayer funds have already been allocated to the project through Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
In response to the injunction obtained by the National Trust, Trump criticized its members on social media, describing their actions as detrimental to the country and accusing them of attempting to obstruct a project vital to national security and the safety of current and future presidents, along with their families and staff.
He went so far as to call the organization “TREASONISTS” for their lawsuit against what he termed the military complex.
