Surprising praise for Trump's Venezuela action while NYT criticizes the decision

Editorial Board Praises Trump’s Actions in Venezuela

The Washington Post’s Editorial Board commended President Donald Trump’s military campaign in Venezuela, describing it as an “undoubted tactical success” in an editorial published on Saturday.

They referred to the operation that captured Nicolás Maduro as one of the boldest actions by the President in recent years, stating that it clearly succeeded tactically. The editorial, titled “Justice in Venezuela,” emphasized the importance of ensuring that this victory translates into stability for the country rather than chaos.

The board pointed out that this accomplishment showcased America’s military and intelligence capabilities, reinforcing that they remain “second to none.” They further declared it a significant victory for national interests.

“The removal of Mr. Maduro sends a strong signal to dictators throughout Latin America and beyond: Mr. Trump will push through,” they noted. The board contrasted this with President Joe Biden’s offer to alleviate sanctions, which they critiqued as ineffective given Maduro’s perceived weakness after his alleged election theft.

The piece accused Maduro of making a historic miscalculation, asserting that he had opportunities to secure a more comfortable life elsewhere, yet he may face prison instead. The editorial also touched on potential legal challenges surrounding the President’s decisions, especially given the lack of Congressional approval.

While acknowledging the legal complexities, the board mentioned that both Trump and Biden have branded Maduro a criminal, increasing the bounty for his capture to $25 million. Senator Mike Lee reportedly received assurance from Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding Trump’s authority as commander-in-chief, suggesting that discussions on this topic would continue, reflecting healthy democratic scrutiny.

In a contrasting view, the New York Times Editorial Board criticized the operation as “illegal and unwise.”

The Fallout from Maduro’s Removal

On January 3, smoke rose from Fort Tiuna in Caracas amid explosions, as U.S. special forces undertook the operation resulting in the capture of Maduro and his wife. However, criticism arose regarding Trump’s explanation for his actions, with claims that they might lead the country into unnecessary international turmoil. The editorial argued that if Trump intended to justify his actions, he should seek Congressional approval, highlighting concerns over compliance with U.S. law.

The White House has not yet responded to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding these developments. The operation received backing primarily from Republican figures, but it faced opposition from Democrats.
