Survey: Economic Concerns Are the Main Priority for Americans

Midterm Elections: Economy Dominates Concerns

As the midterm elections draw closer, Americans place significant emphasis on the economy, according to a recent survey by YouGov. The investigation highlights a diverse range of issues that people consider important, spanning from job opportunities to foreign policy. Yet, economic concerns are clearly at the forefront. Notably, inflation and rising prices emerged as the leading issues, identified by 26% of those surveyed, while job-related concerns and the economy followed at 13%. Health care was also a priority, with 12% expressing it as their main concern. Other issues such as immigration, national security, and taxes came in lower, with 9%, 7%, and 6% respectively, while less than 5% of respondents prioritized foreign policy, education, abortion, civil rights, gun control, and criminal justice reform.

Interestingly, there’s a bipartisan agreement on several key issues, with inflation/prices cited as the top concern by around a quarter of Republicans, Democrats, and independents (25%, 25%, and 28%, respectively). Beyond that point, their focus diverges considerably.

For Republicans, immigration ranks as the second most pressing issue at 20%, trailed by national security at 12%. In contrast, independents place greater importance on jobs and the economy, at 15%, while Democrats highlight health care as their second priority at 16%.

The survey, which took place from April 10-13, 2026, included 1,748 participants, out of which 1,573 were registered voters.

As Republicans gear up for the midterm elections, they aim to maintain majorities in both chambers of Congress to continue pushing forward President Trump’s agenda. Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters expressed concerns about potential disruptions from the opposition, suggesting that they might pursue impeachment, which could stall the president’s momentum.

“They’re looking for chaos, while we’re focused on getting Americans back to work and allowing them to keep more of their earnings,” Gruters stated, underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing average Americans’ needs.

He also pointed out that mainstream media tends to distrust the Republican Party, primarily seeking chaos and aiming to diminish the president’s influence. This perception, he argues, underscores the need for high-profile events, like midterm conventions, to build momentum.
