Survey Shows High Approval for Trump's Iran Peace Agreement

Support for Trump’s Proposed Peace Deal with Iran

A recent survey from The Economist and YouGov reveals notable backing for various aspects of President Donald Trump’s proposed peace deal.

During a dinner at the Palace of Versailles, Trump signed a peace framework intended to resolve hostilities between the United States and Iran. This memorandum outlines a plan to negotiate a comprehensive agreement within 60 days. The proposal includes immediate cessation of military actions by both nations, a commitment to avoid future attacks, and mutual recognition of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

A significant number of Americans are willing to wait for the conflict with Iran to conclude, as shown by the Economist/YouGov poll. Out of about 1,700 respondents, 66% believe that reaching a deal should be a priority. This sentiment is shared across political lines, with 74% of Democrats and 61% of Republicans favoring a negotiated resolution. Almost 90% of participants reported monitoring the news concerning the proposed agreement.

While there seems to be some division on the overall deal, consensus emerges on key issues. For instance, 69% support pausing Iran’s nuclear weapons program and discussing its enriched uranium. The same percentage, 69%, also agrees on the necessity of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to facilitate commercial shipping for the next two months. Despite ongoing political disagreements regarding broader topics, most voters seem to prioritize de-escalation of tensions and avoidance of new wars in the Middle East.

In general, Republican support for the deal is stronger than that of Democrats, with 53% of Republicans backing it compared to 21% of Democrats. Among Republicans aligned with the “Make America Great Again” movement, support rises to 63%.

However, many Americans express skepticism regarding Iran’s long-term intentions. About two-thirds believe Iran would still pursue nuclear weapons, and a significant 81% worry that negotiations may fail and lead to renewed conflict.

Yet, most voters prefer a diplomatic approach over prolonging the conflict. When it comes to negotiations, Americans desire their leaders to prioritize national interests. Approximately 58% state that the U.S. should uphold agreements beneficial to it, even in the face of potential opposition from the Israeli government.
