Maine Senate Race Tightening Ahead of 2026

The upcoming 2026 Maine Senate race is shaping up to be very close. Current Republican Senator Susan Collins has a slight edge over Democrat Graham Platner, based on a poll released this Tuesday.

In the poll conducted among registered voters, Collins holds a 50% approval rating, while Platner is at 47%. However, when looking at the more engaged voters, Platner actually outpaces Collins with 53% to 44%. This is largely attributed to growing enthusiasm among Democrats, with about 76% indicating they are more likely to vote, compared to 61% of Republicans.

Interestingly, voters have reservations about both candidates, though concerns about Platner appear to be more pronounced. Around a third of independents expressed serious worries about Platner’s judgment, while 30% felt Collins has been in office too long. Conversely, only 10% of Democrats voiced significant concerns about Platner, and the same percentage applies for Republicans regarding Collins.

Daron Shaw, a Republican pollster, noted that Maine is typically a blue state, represented by a long-standing Republican, making it a prime target for Democrats looking to flip the Senate seat. He suggests that the outcome might hinge on whether voters can set aside any allegations against Platner in favor of party loyalty.

Collins tends to perform better among men, non-college graduates, gun owners, and rural voters. Platner, on the other hand, finds support among women, college graduates, suburban voters, and moderates, although he seems to be struggling to meet the performance level of former Vice President Kamala Harris with these groups in 2024.

Collins is often seen as a moderate Republican, garnering strong support from both MAGA (97%) and non-MAGA (82%) Republicans. In fact, she appears slightly more successful in retaining her base compared to Platner. Overall, Collins enjoys 93% support from Republicans, while 86% of Democrats are behind Platner. Among independents, it’s quite narrow, with Platner leading by just two points, 47% to 45%.

Even with Platner’s background as a military veteran, Collins is ahead among military voters by 18 points. Interestingly, while about 80% of both Collins’s and Platner’s supporters are decided, 20% remain open to changing their votes.

When it comes to key issues, the economy remains the foremost concern for Maine voters. Only 10% feel they are making economic progress, while over 40% believe they are falling behind. Voters cited inflation as the primary issue influencing their Senate vote, followed by political divisions, health care, and immigration.
