Tragic Shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada
This week, a horrific event unfolded in the charming community of Tumbler Ridge located in northeastern British Columbia.
A transgender man is believed to have killed his mother and stepbrother off-campus before turning his violence toward Tumbler Ridge Middle School on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to many others.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police received an emergency call reporting an active shooter at approximately 1:20 p.m. During the official alert sent to the community, the shooter was described as a “woman in a dress with brown hair.”
Law enforcement quickly arrived at the school, where they searched for the suspect and discovered several victims along with the shooter, who reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“It’s almost unbearable,” remarked a local source.
As students evacuated the building under the watchful eye of the police, the Progress Pride flag was visibly displayed in one of the school windows.
“This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation. The swift cooperation of schools, first responders, and the community was critical to our response,” said Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd, Commander of the RCMP North District.
On Wednesday, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald confirmed to reporters that the victims included a female teacher, three female students, and two male students, with ages ranging from 12 to 39. Approximately 25 others were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a nearby medical facility.
Officials later found two additional bodies in a nearby residence—identified as the suspect’s mother, Jennifer Strang, and brother-in-law, Emmett.
Authorities discovered both a long gun and a modified handgun at the school.
By 6:45 p.m., the RCMP lifted the active shooter alert, allowing schools to unsecure following the lockdown. Citing the severity of the events, the local school district announced it would remain closed for the remainder of the week.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, RCMP Sergeant Chris Clark stated that the identity of the shooter had likely been established but withheld due to ongoing investigations and privacy concerns.
Authorities expressed that they would “struggle” to ascertain a motive behind this tragic incident. The shooter has since been identified as Jesse Van Luetzeler, an 18-year-old from Tumbler Ridge who had begun transitioning approximately six years ago.
Russell Strang, the shooter’s uncle, confirmed that Jesse identified as transgender and was responsible for the tragic events.
A father, who is a local hockey coach and parent of children at the middle school, recounted how his daughter was hidden in a classroom with one of the shooter’s brothers during the chaos. He speculated that the shooter may have been searching for the brothers inside the school.
The father noted that when he learned Jesse was the alleged shooter, he was not particularly surprised because he had observed troubled behaviors over the years.
Online accounts linked to the suspect showcased a transgender flag alongside gun imagery, indicating some of the personal interests mentioned. Reports also suggested that police had made several visits to Van Luetzeler’s home, primarily concerning mental health-related issues and the presence of firearms.
British Columbia Premier David Eby extended his call for support to the community, urging everyone to “wrap the people of Tumbler Ridge in love” in the wake of this tragedy.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for the bravery of first responders and extended condolences to the families affected by this brutal act of violence.
Tumbler Ridge City Councilman Chris Norbury noted that he was personally acquainted with all the victims and reflected on the immense loss their families would endure.
This incident adds to a concerning trend, with Van Luetzeler appearing as one of multiple recent mass shooters who identify as transgender.
- A transgender man was involved in a shooting at a church in Minneapolis.
- Another individual planned a school shooting in Maryland.
- A transgender youth perpetrated violence in Iowa.
- A woman identifying as transgender committed a shooting in Nashville.
