Democrats Criticize ICE in Oversight Hearing
During an oversight hearing on Tuesday, Democratic lawmakers expressed strong disapproval of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), accusing the agency of systematic abuse and misconduct. They dismissed the claims made by ICE leadership as misleading or untrue.
The hearing, part of the House Homeland Security Committee’s efforts, quickly escalated into heated exchanges between Democratic representatives and immigration officials, with several moments going viral on social media.
One notable moment involved Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), who referred to ICE as acting like “fascists” or “secret police.” He urged Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to resign, alleging that by remaining in his position, Lyons was aligning himself with “murderers who bring terror to our cities.”
Swalwell directly asked Lyons, “Are you leaving ICE?” to which Lyons replied, “No, sir, I won’t.”
Other Democrats were equally pointed in their language. Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) likened ICE agents to slave patrols and Ku Klux Klan members, noting that federal agents often instill fear in communities of color. Similarly, Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) accused Lyons of having “blood on him,” recounting an emotionally charged interaction she had with a woman who expressed fear of divine judgment.
While Democrats characterized ICE as a “fascist” entity, officials defended their mission, stating their focus is on violent criminals, human traffickers, and repeat immigration offenders.
The hearing took place amid ongoing negotiations in Congress over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, with some Republicans warning that rising partisan tensions could lead to a government shutdown that might affect border security.
At the end of the session, immigration authorities dismissed calls for resignation, labeling the accusations as exaggerated narratives rather than factual criticism. No significant actions were taken as a result of the hearing’s confrontations.
