Restaurant Offers Free Meals for Bipartisan Dining in Minnesota
A restaurant in Minnesota is inviting state legislators to set aside their political differences by offering complimentary meals to those willing to dine with colleagues from the other party.
Sweeney’s Saloon, located in St. Paul, has launched a “cross-the-aisle dinner” special aimed at promoting collaboration between Democrats and Republicans. This initiative will run until the end of the legislative session in May 2026, with the hope of easing some of the tension that has been brewing in state politics.
Will Rolfe, the owner, reached out via email to every member of the Minnesota State Capitol to announce the free lunch and beer deal in exchange for fostering political camaraderie. “I felt it was necessary to do something because both sides often see each other in a negative light, and progress is unlikely without collaboration,” he explained.
After publicizing the offer, two congressmen—Republican Bjorn Olson and Democrat Brad Tabke—took advantage of the special, meeting at Sweeney’s for snacks and drinks despite their differing political views.
In his lighthearted commentary about the situation, Rolfe joked, “Fools and their money are always welcome here, but I can’t say Olson and Tabke are fools. They made out well with free food and drinks through this promotion.” Posts featuring the two legislators enjoying their meal were shared on Instagram.
Tabke commented on the atmosphere, stating, “We don’t have to agree on everything. It’s perfectly fine to gather and have a good time together, even if we differ in opinions.” Rolfe mentioned that although Olson and Tabke were the first to participate, he is hearing from other lawmakers who might join in before Congress wraps up on May 18.
