Swiss Air flight takeoff from NYC to Zurich aborted after 4 jets cleared to cross runway: report

Last week, a Swissair flight from New York City to Zurich aborted takeoff, the airline confirmed, averting a “potentially dangerous situation.”

According to FlightAware, Flight LX17 from John F. Kennedy Airport left the gate on April 17 at 4:21 p.m. The plane was cleared to take off at the same time that air traffic controllers on a different frequency cleared four other planes to cross the runway, according to audio obtained by NPR.

“Thanks to the high level of situational awareness and quick reaction of the crew, the potentially dangerous situation was quickly de-escalated,” Swissair said in a statement to FOX Business.

The airline added that Airbus A330 crews responded professionally and regularly undergo simulator training for similar situations.

“The aircraft had only reached a speed slightly above its maximum taxi speed when the brakes were applied again,” an airline spokesperson said in a statement.
