A local councilor is calling on people to oppose outsourcing garbage collection as Sydney's garbage collection problems continue across the city.
Sydney City Council has long used independent contractors to manage waste collection, but years of COVID-related disruption followed by strikes and labor shortages into 2023 have pushed residents to breaking point. ing.
With some collections delayed by more than four weeks, Labor councilor Linda Scott is concerned that the public's health and wellbeing will continue to be adversely affected by the continued lack of rubbish removal.
Mr Scott, who is currently a Labor councilor on Sydney City Council and a former deputy mayor, hopes Sydneysiders will send a “message” to the mayor to fix the city's waste problem before it is too late.
“After years of inaction on our waste crisis, City of Sydney residents are demanding change in 2024,” she said.
In a series of recent Facebook posts, the Labor councilor described a sickening scene of red and yellow bins overflowing with large rubbish bags, shoes and clothing, and in some cases the lids wouldn't close and maggots were spilling out. sharing images.
“Sydney's streets are filthy, rat- and maggot-infested, and residents are rightly calling for help in the face of a public health disaster,” she said.
The original post was shared by a disgruntled resident of Gorey Lane on a local Erskineville group and has so far received more than 80 scathing comments.
Enthusiastic community members began sharing other parts of the city where waste collection was similarly absent.
“Time to put the clover in the bin,” one person who supported Mr Scott's petition commented on the councilor's Facebook page.
Another wrote: “Same issue a week ago, bins were not collected in Pyrmont for 2 weeks.”
“The alleys are infested with vermin and flies,” wrote another.
The problem isn't just trash spilled on the streets and littered on sidewalks. Concerned local residents have also reported an increase in illegal dumping across the city.
“It's time for a change,” Scott told NCA NewsWire.
“There are no Moorish maggots.”
When the city moved to outsource the rest of its waste collection services, Scott said he was the only council member who opposed the change.
“As the only member of Congress to vote against the privatization of waste collection, I am shocked to see my warnings come true,” she said.
Mr Scott said it would be impossible for Clover Moor to continue to meet the needs of the city, with many local residents taking to social media platforms to vent their frustration and disgust at the “changed face of their city”. says.
“Clover Moore has definitely changed the face of Sydney and done some good, but she was elected when Malcolm Fraser was still prime minister and after 44 years in office, she will be mayor of Sydney in 2024. I just can't keep up with what's being asked of me,'' she said.
NCA NewsWire has contacted Sydney City Council for comment.
