Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle advertisement criticized as 'Nazi propaganda' by extreme activists

Controversy Surrounding Sidney Sweeney’s Ad for American Eagle Jeans

A recent advertisement for American Eagle Jeans featuring actress Sidney Sweeney has stirred considerable debate on social media, particularly among left-wing TikTok users.

In the ad, 27-year-old Sweeney, clad in branded jeans and a denim jacket, makes a play on words between “jeans” and “genes.” She states, “The genes are passed on from parents to offspring, often determining characteristics such as hair color, personality, and even eye color.”

As the clip gained traction on Sweeney’s fan account, it quickly drew backlash, which led the account to switch to private settings shortly after that.

Another segment of the ad reiterates this phrase with Sweeney stating, “I’m not here to tell you to buy American Eagle jeans, nor do they claim to be the most comfortable jeans I’ve worn.” She adds, “If you say you want to buy jeans, I’m not going to stop you, but we’re clearly not telling you to buy American Eagle jeans.”

This wordplay has led some viewers to perceive it as a reference to eugenics, igniting reactions that range from confusion to outrage. One TikTok user commented that they thought it was kind of absurd but still interesting—perhaps something they’d recall in a history class.

Others were far less charitable, equating Sweeney’s messaging to “Nazi propaganda.” One comment referred to Sweeney’s portrayal of a “blonde white woman” discussing her “good genes” as particularly unsettling.

Another TikTok user voiced their displeasure by stating, “If you don’t even understand how bad it is, I need you to open your eyes.” This sentiment about the ad being reminiscent of troubling ideologies sparked further discussion.

Despite the aim likely being light-hearted or trendy, the backlash has been severe enough that prominent voices in the media, like journalist Robbie Soave, mentioned that this might reflect a trend of “manufactured rage,” criticizing the extreme reactions as overblown.

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has faced harsh scrutiny from the left. Previous incidents involving Sweeney have shown how polarized opinions can become, especially regarding perceived social messages.

In light of this incident, it’s evident that Sweeney’s ads have struck a nerve and highlight the complexities of messaging in today’s climate, leaving viewers to grapple with their interpretations and responses.
