An 8-year-old Missouri girl who fell ill and died suddenly on a Chicago-bound flight in June had at least five illnesses at the time of her death, a new coroner’s report has found.
Sydney Weston died June 13 from complications of chronic primary adrenalitis and multiple infections, including enterovirus and strep infections, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
She also suffered from inflammation of the small intestine, known as duodenitis, and inflammation of the thyroid gland, known as thyroiditis. According to 25 News Now:.
Harwood determined that Weston’s symptoms suggested he was suffering from an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own healthy cells, affecting organ function.
Weston died on June 13 after becoming unresponsive on a flight from Joplin, Missouri, to Chicago on a holiday with his parents.
The plane was diverted to Peoria, Illinois, for an emergency landing, and Weston died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
Previously released preliminary autopsy results were inconclusive but found that her body showed no signs of abuse, neglect or foul play.
Weston was just one week away from celebrating his ninth birthday when he died.
“She will forever be remembered for bringing happiness to everyone she met. Our hearts are heavy. She was our daughter and we celebrate her beautiful life,” her obituary read.
