Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting won a commanding 3-0 victory over Uzbekistan’s Shitra Turdybekova at the Paris Olympics on Friday.

The judges scored Lin’s dominant performance in each round, with her height and reach proving to be the biggest difference in the bout, as Turdybekova was clearly overpowered.

Lin was the top seed in the 57kg weight class and was by-passed into the round of 16. Turdibekova defeated Congo’s Marcelato Sakobi Machu to advance to the round where she will face Lin.

Lin will next face Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria.

The boxer was embroiled in a gender controversy before the bout.

Lin was disqualified from the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships, which is sanctioned by the International Boxing Association, for not meeting gender criteria and was stripped of her bronze medal.

At the time of Lin’s disqualification, IBA president Umar Kremlev said: “Based on DNA tests, it has emerged that several athletes had attempted to pose as women in order to deceive their colleagues.”

The IBA has since maintained that Lin’s disqualification was “justified” and has stood by its decision.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended its decision to allow Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif to compete in the Olympics.

“These two athletes are victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA,” the IOC said. “They were suddenly disqualified, without due process, towards the end of the 2023 IBA World Championships.”

“According to the minutes of the meeting, available on the IBA website, the decision was initially made by the IBA Secretary General and CEO alone. The IBA Board subsequently endorsed it and subsequently requested that a procedure be established to be followed in future similar cases and reflected in IBA regulations. The minutes also state that the IBA should “establish clear procedures regarding sex testing.”

“The current attack against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was made without due process, particularly given that these two athletes have competed together at the highest level of competition for many years.”
