Backlash in Texas Senate Race Over Comments About Opponent
A Democrat in Texas running for the U.S. Senate is facing criticism due to remarks he made concerning a former rival. Morgan Thompson, a political influencer active on TikTok, reported that state Rep. James Talarico referred to former Rep. Colin Allred as a “plain black man.”
Thompson, who identifies as Black, mentioned that this comment came after a town hall meeting in Plano on January 12. Talarico, currently opposing U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, allegedly said, “I signed up to run against a mediocre black man, not a formidable, intelligent black woman.”
Talarico’s description of Allred as an “ordinary black man” contrasts sharply with his characterization of Crockett as a “terrifying, intelligent black woman.” In December, Allred ended his campaign, while Crockett was gearing up to run. She officially launched her Senate candidacy on December 8, 2025, coinciding with Allred’s exit.
In response to the uproar, Talarico’s campaign highlighted a statement clarifying his comments, claiming they were misrepresented. He characterized his remarks about Allred’s campaign as mediocre, but asserted that he would never attack him based on race. Talarico noted that Allred, as a Black American, faced immense challenges to achieve his position, acknowledging the potentially painful implications of his words.
Talarico emphasized that Democrats are united and expressed deep respect for Allred.
In a video response, Allred addressed Talarico’s comments, accusing him of making “reckless and bold statements.” He challenged Talarico to support Black women without undermining Black men, asserting that such behavior is detrimental to their community. Allred also insinuated that Talarico’s choice of words might reflect something more personal about himself.
Concluding the video, Allred encouraged support for Crockett, stating that Talarico should not be a candidate for the Senate. Both candidates will compete in Texas’s primary on March 3, with the winner taking on Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).
