US-Russia talks: Who is going with Trump, Putin to Alaska?

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet face-to-face in Anchorage, Alaska. The summit, happening soon, is significant as it presents an opportunity for the leaders to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine—an issue Trump pledged to resolve during his campaign last year.

Let’s take a look at the participants in both delegations.

US Delegation

Steve Witkov, Special Envoy

Steve Witkov, a special envoy for Trump, recently returned from Ukraine, where he engaged with Russian officials to explore possibilities for peace in the ongoing war. He often plays a crucial role in key discussions about foreign policy.

Witkov is closely aligned with Trump and acts as a pivotal link between the president and various global leaders.

Marco Rubio, Secretary of State

Accompanying Trump is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who aims to advocate for “security guarantees” sought by Ukrainian President Voldimir Zelensky.

“To reach a peaceful resolution, we must discuss security assurances,” said Rubio to reporters, reflecting a common view among leaders about the need for stability.

He emphasized that “territorial disputes” need to be addressed for peace talks to be fruitful. Rubio previously met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and the two are expected to meet again during the summit.

Rubio holds dual roles in the Trump administration—as both Secretary of State and national security adviser—and has strong connections in Congress.

Scott Bescent, Treasury Secretary

As the summit unfolds, Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent joins the U.S. team. Seen as a key figure in Trump’s economic cabinet, Bescent might relay the economic implications of a potential agreement with Russia.

Before the meeting, he hinted that if discussions deteriorate, Trump might enforce more sanctions against Russia due to escalating violence in Ukraine.

“There’s understandable frustration with Putin. I anticipated a more cooperative dialogue,” Bescent remarked, noting the unpredictable nature of the negotiations. “If negotiations deteriorate, we could consider increasing sanctions and tariffs,” he added.

Other notable officials in Trump’s entourage include Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and various aides and advisors.

Russian Delegation

Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister

On the Russian side, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov brings decades of diplomatic experience, having served in key roles during various international crises.

Since 2004, Lavrov has held his position and previously worked as Russia’s ambassador to the UN. His extensive background includes overseeing Russia’s actions in Ukraine during pivotal moments in 2014 and 2022.

He is expected to provide historical insights into the negotiations, reflecting Putin’s future intentions.

Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Policy Advisor

In attendance will be foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov, who is known for his diplomacy and is expected to maintain a calm demeanor during these high-stakes talks aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

Andrei Belusov, Defense Minister

Defense Minister Andrei Belusov will also be a part of the Russian delegation, bringing a deep understanding of the ongoing military situation in Ukraine. He has previously held the office of deputy prime minister and was appointed to oversee military operations in crucial regions.

Other members of the Russian team for the summit include Finance Minister Anton Silanov and investment envoy Kiril Dmitriev.
