Tapper blasts Democrats’ Orwellian tactics trying to convince public to ‘not believe what you saw’ at debate

CNN host Jake Tapper accused Democratic Party officials of using Orwellian tactics to manipulate President Biden’s debate performance.

Tapper co-moderated last week’s presidential debate, which was widely seen as a disastrous night for Biden. Many Democrats and liberals in the media have called for the president to step down and be replaced by another candidate. As for Democrats who still defend Biden, Tapper argued they are disingenuously downplaying or ignoring the president’s signs of aging.

“There is a clear pattern to what appears to be Democratic officials trying to convince the public not to believe what your eyes and ears saw and heard on Thursday night,” Tapper said in his opening monologue on “The Lead” on Monday.

After playing a montage of Biden’s most criticized moments from the debate, Tapper said, “Democratic figures have tried to spin this in a variety of ways. They’ve said President Biden just had a cold. They’ve said it was just a one-night stand, like when President Obama in 2012 looked off and a little cranky.”

But he continued, “To be clear, behind the scenes most Democrats were witnessing the same shocking scene as you – the leading Democratic candidate, the current president of the United States, having difficulty even articulating his basic positions for 90 minutes of the debate.”

“This kind of spin is very reminiscent of a quote from George Orwell’s ‘1984,’” Tapper said, alluding to his use of the quote about Trump five years ago. “It remains true today: ‘The Party told us to reject the evidence our eyes and ears heard. That was the Party’s last and most important command.'”

He promised not to do that on his show, saying he would be speaking to “researchers in the Biden campaign, people close to President Biden and, frankly, people who are more willing to speak freely, honestly and openly about the candidate than most Democratic figures across the country.”
