Teacher reportedly tackled Oregon gunman

Details have emerged about the tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon, where a teacher and a father confronted the gunman.

An educator from Silver Rail Elementary School, Cassidy Schutz, has spoken out following the deadly incident earlier this month. She described the tragedy as something that will haunt her forever.

Schutz, a certified learning specialist, issued her first public remarks through Bend-La Pine Schools about two weeks after the attack on October 15th, which led to the loss of three children and a teacher’s life.

“Words can’t fully express the sadness I feel after the events of October 15th. This isn’t just a story; it’s a truly horrifying tragedy affecting real lives,” she stated.

Schutz expressed her thoughts for the families of the victims, saying, “My heart goes out to you. Everything happened so quickly, and I wish we had more time. This loss will be something I carry with me forever.”

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz acknowledged that Schutz made a courageous effort during the attack by throwing her cellphone at the shooter and trying to wrestle his shotgun away from him.

She also requested privacy as she embarks on her healing journey.

“There aren’t any words for the unimaginable reality we now face. My focus is on the families affected, our school community, and my own healing,” she said. “As I work through this process, I ask for the space and privacy I need. I won’t be making any further public comments for now.”

The tragic shooting occurred when a 16-year-old former student entered the school and opened fire in a special needs classroom. Teacher Megan Lambert, age 25, and three children, including five-year-old Rhoam Summer and two others aged eight and eleven, were killed.

Another teacher, Becky Drury, along with a seven-year-old girl, sustained injuries but survived the attack. Drury previously recounted her attempt to secure her classroom door upon seeing the gunman, but she was shot before she could close it. She pretended to be dead to evade further gunfire until a father, Kaylub Giamanco, intervened and shot the assailant.
