Teacher Suspended After Alleged Assault in Walmart Parking Lot
A former Teacher of the Year is facing suspension after reportedly attempting to run over the father of her child in a Walmart parking lot.
Sade Deresia Nacheil Nelson, recognized as a 2025 Teacher of the Year from St. John’s High School in Charleston, South Carolina, is accused of assaulting the child’s father and his girlfriend during what was supposed to be a routine custody exchange on October 18. Various sources, including Live5News, detailed these events.
Witnesses claim that Nelson, 37, punched the father repeatedly and even tried to hit him with her car.
According to police, the father said he was attacked as he opened the passenger door of his vehicle to collect his son. He fell to the ground while trying to evade her punches, as per police documentation.
Security cameras caught footage of Nelson driving toward the man shortly after the incident.
Reports indicate she charged with several crimes, including third-degree assault and battery, domestic violence of a serious nature, and willful abandonment of a child.
Interestingly, Nelson disputes the claims, saying that it was the father who initiated the violence by punching her. She alleged that while she was taking a photo of his license plate, he tackled her to the ground.
Footage also shows moments of confrontation between them, with the father leaning against her vehicle and Nelson approaching him. At one point, he is seen tackling her, which she argues was the commencement of the altercation.
The situation escalated, and a bystander had to intervene before things worsened. Following the confrontation, Nelson reportedly left the scene with her son just before police arrived. She later stated that a friend would communicate with law enforcement on her behalf.
In light of the incident, the Charleston County School District has placed Nelson on administrative leave while investigations are ongoing. A spokesperson for the district, Andy Pruitt, mentioned that due to the sensitive nature of the case, they cannot share additional details currently.
