Ted Cruz knows exactly who is to blame for failed border bill — and he’s demanding accountability: ‘Entirely avoidable’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is calling on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Texas) to resign as Senate Republican leader.

Asked at Tuesday’s press conference if he thought it was time for McConnell to step down, Cruz admitted: “I do.”

“I think Republican leaders should actually lead this conference and advance Republican priorities,” Cruz explained.

Cruz said the problem is that Senate Republican leadership is trying to get Republican Sen. James Lankford (Oklahoma) to co-author the bill with Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). ). — as a sacrificial lamb to write a bill “designed to lose.”

Cruz said the secret negotiations were a policy fiasco for Republicans.

Worse, this bill would hand Democrats a victory, not only because it would not end the border crisis, but because it would give them political ammunition to use against Republicans in the upcoming elections.

“Who won this fight? His name is Charles Schumer,” Cruz later explained on Fox News.

“The purpose of this bill was to make every Democrat running for the Senate and every Democrat running for the House stand up and say, self-righteously, ‘I wanted to protect the border, I really wanted to do that. But the mean Republicans won’t let that happen,” he continued. “I have to say to the Senate Republican leadership, I told them months ago, other conservatives told them months ago, and they continue down this path. What we ended up with was a box canyon where the suicide bombers crashed into a wall.” That was a disaster. And it was completely avoidable. ”

cruise first advocated for McConnell’s resignation After a disappointing 2022 midterm election in which Republicans squandered their chance to gain a majority in the House and Senate. But Mr. McConnell refused.

Meanwhile, McConnell responded to Cruz on Tuesday, saying, “I think we can all agree that Sen. Cruz is not a fan.”

Mr. McConnell then dismissed his critics and said the only way to resolve the border crisis was to compromise with Democrats.

“While I’ve been in this job, there’s been a small group of people who have been persistent critics, and they’ve deserved it,” McConnell said. Said Politico. “We’ve been talking about the border because our persistent critics wanted us to. … We can’t pass a bill without negotiating with a Democratic president and a Democratic Senate.”
