Teen girl crashes car during illegal street racing in Southern California

A girl walked away without serious injuries after a frightening drag racing incident in Long Beach left her car completely wrecked.

Long Beach police reported that they were summoned to the intersection of Spring Street and Kilroy Airport Way around 11:51 p.m. on Friday. The crash resulted in damage to a traffic control box and completely destroyed a traffic light.

Witnesses stated that a boy and a woman were racing in a BMW, reaching speeds estimated between 90 and 160 mph when they lost control. The driver veered around a curve near the airport, culminating in a crash. Notably, the other vehicle sped off and did not stay at the scene.

Video footage captured moments after the accident showed the juvenile driver panicking as onlookers approached to check on her. She tearfully admitted to driving alone and confirmed there were no passengers in the vehicle.

The car, now flipped over, was found crumpled against a concrete wall.

According to police, preliminary findings suggest the car was headed east on Spring Street while racing against another vehicle when the driver lost control. Authorities noted that the other car fled the scene.

Footage also depicted medical staff attending to her before she was placed on a stretcher for transport to a hospital.

The Long Beach Fire Department mentioned that the girl managed to get herself out of the wreckage.

She was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, officials stated.

Though the car was in shambles, with its make and model nearly unidentifiable, eyewitness accounts conveyed the extent of the damage. Wires and metal debris littered the area where the car had been.

The situation remains unclear in terms of any potential charges, as police continue their investigation.
