Teen taken into custody for the shooting death of Indiana University graduate Brett Scrogham

Arrest Made in Indiana Shooting Case

A 14-year-old suspect has been taken into custody regarding the tragic shooting death of Brett Scrogham, a recent Indiana University business graduate. Scrogham was on his way to a baseball game to meet his parents when the incident occurred.

The unnamed boy was arrested on Wednesday, linked to the May 28 incident that led to Scrogham’s death in a parking lot near the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the arrest.

Chief Tanya Terry expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating, “While today’s arrests are important, my heart breaks for everyone affected by this tragedy. A young man lost his life, and another now faces charges that will change his life forever.”

She added that while the arrest is a step forward in the investigation, it doesn’t alleviate the anguish felt by Scrogham’s family and friends, emphasizing that a single act of violence can dramatically alter many lives in a fleeting moment.

According to Terry, the shooting seems to have been a random act of violence between two unfamiliar individuals. She acknowledged the challenges in preventing such crimes, noting that the police alone cannot tackle these issues.

“It’s frustrating and disappointing to say that the person we believe is responsible is a 14-year-old child. Please understand that,” she remarked.

Authorities are treating the shooting, which unfolded on the third floor of a parking garage, as a potential carjacking scenario.

The arresting teenager is currently being held without bail as law enforcement collaborates with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office to decide on potential charges. Given his age, the case will proceed in juvenile court.

Scrogham was killed while heading to watch a game featuring the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, just weeks after graduating from the Kelley School of Business at IU, where he was recognized as one of the top students in his class.

The community was deeply impacted by his death, with those familiar with him describing Scrogham as intelligent and selfless. A close family friend, Dwayne Sawyer, expressed that “Brett was that spark” who aimed to make a positive difference in the world.

Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.) paid tribute to Scrogham, calling him a “God-fearing Christian” and criticizing what he perceived to be a lenient response from Indianapolis authorities to violent crime.

Banks emphasized the need for accountability, stating that if excuses continue to be made regarding law enforcement, innocent lives will remain at risk.

In the wake of the incident, Chief Terry cautioned young people in the city about the serious consequences of their actions, regardless of their age. She urged parents and community members to take an active role in guiding and protecting youth to prevent violence.

“If you are a parent and you need help with your children, it is your responsibility to ask for help,” she advised, advocating for proactive parenting rather than a passive approach.
