Teens rescued from abandoned Colorado missile silo; 1 injured, another facing charges

One teenage boy was seriously injured and another was charged with trespassing after being rescued from an abandoned missile silo in Colorado.

An 18-year-old man fell about 30 feet into an underground silo near the town of Deer Trail around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office. According to a press release, the high school student and his friend crawled through a broken gate at the entrance to the silo.

At around 6am, two of the victim’s unharmed friends, who remained with him until help arrived, were rescued from the silo. Rescuers arrived at the victim 30 minutes later. He was removed from the silo at 8:30 a.m. and taken to the hospital by Air Life Denver with “serious injuries.”

In addition to the three youths who were in the underground silo when rescuers arrived, five youths were also contacted on the ground. The group consisted of both boys and girls. One of the men, an 18-year-old male who was inside the silo, received a summons for third-degree criminal trespass. Injured victims who are expected to survive could also be charged with trespassing.

The other teens were released to their parents pending trespassing charges. Investigators say all those involved attend Cherry Creek Schools high school in the Denver metropolitan area.

There was no cellphone reception inside the silo, and rescue workers told FOX31 the injured boy was “lucky to be alive.”

Firefighters from Sable Altura Fire, Bennett Watkins Fire, South Metro Fire Rescue, Agate Fire Rescue, and Deer Trail Fire Rescue were also on scene to assist with the rescue.
