California Woman Sentenced for Hosting Underage Parties
A woman from California, known as the “Party Mom,” has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for facilitating alcohol-fueled gatherings for teenagers and for her involvement in sexual misconduct among minors.
On Thursday, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office confirmed that 52-year-old Shannon O’Connor, also referred to as Shannon Bruga, received a maximum sentence of 35 years and 10 months in prison.
O’Connor has been incarcerated since her arrest in 2021 and will have her time served counted towards her sentence. She has also been ordered to register as a sex offender.
Earlier reports revealed that O’Connor was convicted on 48 charges, which included two counts of felony sexual penetration. Prosecutors detailed that these convictions were serious, as they alleged O’Connor had sexually assaulted two girls while they were intoxicated and unable to provide legal consent.
The district attorney emphasized that O’Connor hosted alcohol-laden parties where she procured drinks and solicited sexual acts from minors, some of whom were too inebriated to consent. Over a span of two years, she organized numerous “drunken and destructive parties,” communicating with the teens and urging them to come to her house late at night.
At one of the parties, O’Connor allegedly gave vodka, Fireball whiskey, and condoms to minors. Disturbingly, she encouraged a minor to engage in sexual activity with an intoxicated girl during a New Year’s Eve gathering.
Victims, during the trial, shared deeply personal testimonies, including one who expressed suicidal thoughts stemming from the trauma of these events. According to testimonies, O’Connor had told her victims to keep silent about the incidents, warning them she could face jail time.
In a separate incident, O’Connor allowed a minor to drive an SUV in a school parking lot, which resulted in one of the teens falling from the vehicle and losing consciousness. She was ultimately arrested in October 2021 in Idaho, where authorities found multiple underage individuals at her residence, some of whom had spent the night.
During the sentencing hearing, victims shared their pain, with one stating, “Every day I wake up I’m rebuilding what you destroyed,” and another victim’s mother accusing O’Connor of preying on underage girls.
In a surprising turn, O’Connor expressed remorse in court, claiming responsibility for the situation while asserting that she was punished and would continue to suffer the consequences for her actions. However, a deputy district attorney dismissed her statements as insincere, stating there was “zero accountability.”
The presiding judge, Elizabeth C. Peterson, indicated doubts about O’Connor’s genuine remorse before issuing the sentence.
Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen remarked that O’Connor’s actions went far beyond being a careless parent, asserting that she engaged in dangerously exploitative behavior with minors. He classified her not as a “Party Mom,” but as a convicted felon and registered sex offender.
O’Connor’s attorney has announced plans to appeal the verdict, arguing that she did not have a fair chance to address the allegations brought against her.
In the aftermath, one victim’s mother expressed hope that this case would mobilize people to speak out and keep children safe from predators.
