It looks like Tennessee’s athletic department has a compelling reason to keep its “Happy Hour” promotion running for the rest of the 2026 football season. Last weekend, as the Volunteers were gearing up to host the top-ranked Texas team, news broke that President Donald Trump would be visiting Knoxville for this significant SEC matchup at Neyland Stadium.
In the days leading up to the event, the university anticipated a huge surge of visitors around the stadium, primarily due to the heightened security that accompanies a presidential visit. To address potential crowding issues, the school decided to open the stadium gates an hour earlier than usual, at 9 a.m. ET, to help fans avoid lengthy security lines that had made some miss kickoffs at past events attended by the president.
The Vols’ Athletic Department Had a Busy Day Selling Beer
To encourage fans to arrive even earlier, Tennessee also announced a 50% discount on both concessions and alcohol for the first hour from 9-10 a.m. ET. The idea was to give fans an incentive to stay inside Neyland Stadium for a bit longer before kickoff.
This strategy turned out to be very successful. I personally had never seen such a large crowd gathering two hours before the game, and it appeared that many fans indeed took advantage of the beer discounts. A spokesperson for the University of Tennessee shared that they sold 95,000 units of alcohol during the game, raking in about $1.3 million in sales. Interestingly, the first beer was purchased at 9:02 a.m. ET, which indicates a determined fan made a beeline straight from the metal detectors to the concession stand.
That breaks down to around 13,571 alcoholic beverages sold per hour, considering the game ended around 4 p.m. ET.
Recognizing this success, even though it’s doubtful there will be as many fans arriving so early in future games due to tailgating traditions, Tennessee’s athletic director Danny White shared on social media that the school would continue the promotion for the rest of the season. He remarked, “Should we make it a thing? Feels like we should make it a thing. Inspired by Vol Nation’s incredible response to unusual pregame circumstances last week, Happy Hour at Neyland Stadium will be in effect for the remainder of the season! Gates will open three hours early, with half-priced concessions available for the first hour. I hope this is a small way we can show our appreciation to the best fans in the country. See y’all Saturday!”
Tennessee is set to host Auburn on Saturday afternoon, with gates once again opening three hours before the 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff.
Maybe it’s time for other schools who haven’t adopted similar alcohol promotions to join in on this trend. I mean, nothing quite captures the spirit of college football like 9:00 a.m. half-priced beers!
