Lawmakers question school district leaders on gender policies and parental rights

A House of Education and Workforce Committee hearing has brought lawmakers face-to-face with superintendents from various school districts, including those in Chicago, San Francisco, and Loudoun County. The discussion primarily revolved around how these districts handle gender policies and, more importantly, the rights of parents. Lawmakers expressed concerns over whether school staff adequately communicate important matters regarding student gender transitions to parents, as well as controversial events like “Drag Queen Story Hour.” The superintendents, however, firmly denied any allegations of withholding information from parents.

This ongoing battle surrounding the education of children is intensifying, especially as more parents demand clarity on what their kids are learning in public schools. A recent report has evaluated all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., ranking them based on contentious issues impacting today’s educational landscape, such as parental rights, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and more. The report, titled “Rankings on Integrity in State Education,” was released by Defending Education.

Interestingly, it was Tennessee that emerged as the top state in these rankings, followed closely by Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and Iowa. In contrast, Washington, D.C. landed at the bottom of the list, trailing states like Rhode Island, California, Oregon, and Illinois.

The rankings focused on how states are tackling these hot-button issues rather than evaluating student performance metrics like test scores or graduation rates. The aim is to provide a clearer view for parents regarding educational transparency.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Paul Runko, the senior director of strategic initiatives at Defending Education, noted that this resource is designed to empower parents as they monitor local schools and hold leaders accountable during elections.

Among the five categories evaluated in the report, parental rights stood out, with North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia tying for the top position. Each of these states received points for implementing policies that enhance parental involvement in matters like student gender transitions and sex education.

Additionally, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina were commended for their teacher policies, receiving perfect scores for effectively regulating teacher unions, strikes, and collective bargaining rules.

When it came to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the report found Iowa, Missouri, and West Virginia leading the way, thanks to legislation limiting DEI initiatives.

Another contentious topic has been the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. The report assessed state policies on LGBTQ-inclusive curricula, transgender athlete regulations, and anti-bullying laws pertaining to gender identity, with Alabama, Florida, and Indiana achieving top scores.

The report also highlighted efforts by several states to limit Chinese government influence in education, citing Alabama, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas as achieving perfect scores in this regard.

In another communication to Fox News Digital, Dr. Terry Stoops, director of government affairs at Defending Education, expressed his congratulations to the leading states, praising their education policies that focus on academic integrity over social agendas.

Stoops did not hold back, criticizing the lowest-ranked states for compromising educational quality for social justice concerns, suggesting that parents in these states face a challenging choice between activism and moving elsewhere.

While blue states may be leaning towards DEI initiatives, the report aims to give parents a clearer insight into their state’s educational stance and how policies could affect their children and future generations.
