The search continues for a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer and injuring another during a traffic stop in Tennessee. He is considered “armed and dangerous.”

The search continued into Friday.

A warrant was issued for Kenneth DeHart, 42, on charges of first-degree murder and possession of a firearm as a felon. He is wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred Thursday night, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy, Greg McCowan, was killed in the shooting during the traffic stop, and a female police officer who was nearby was shot in the leg but returned fire. She is currently being treated at a hospital, authorities said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said DeHart was “unwilling to cooperate with officers” and refused to exit the vehicle.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. A police officer was killed tonight,” Blount County Sheriff James Lee Veron said at a news conference, looking visibly shaken. “I’m so sorry for the loss of a young man. I just spoke to his family. I apologized for not being able to protect him.”

Bellon also offered a $10,000 reward to anyone with more information about DeHart.

“We’re going to take this man off the streets of East Tennessee and put him behind bars,” he claimed.

The agency said on social media that DeHart was last seen in Maryville.

Anyone with information on Mr. DeHart’s whereabouts, or who has seen or spoken to him since Thursday evening, is asked to call. 865-981-7125 or 1-800-TBI-FIND.
