A Tennessee mother is mourning the death of her teenage daughter after police say she accidentally shot and killed her daughter while she was digging through her purse for her keys.

The Nashville Metropolitan Police Department announced in a press release that it is investigating the death of 13-year-old Dearia Radley.

Authorities said the boy’s mother, DeAnne Radley, called 911 around 10 p.m. Saturday.

Radley told police that while he was looking for his keys, he reached into his bag and accidentally pressed the trigger of a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun.

Police said the gun fired, striking the girl in her purse, killing her.

The girl was taken to the emergency room at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where police said she died from a single gunshot.
