Tennessee School Board Member Faces Backlash for Inappropriate Comments

A school board member in Tennessee has been labeled a liar and told to avoid contact with a high school senior after he made a comment about her attractiveness and subsequently attempted to defend his remarks.

Keith Irvin, a member of the Washington County Board, is under pressure to resign following an outcry after last week’s meeting, where he insisted he meant no disrespect and tried to explain the term “hot.” “When I say she’s hot, I mean she’s in great shape,” he said during an emergency meeting, admitting he struggles with words.

Irvin, who faced allegations of inappropriate behavior in front of students back in 2009, found himself interrupted before he could finish his statement, with audience members heckling him.

“You’re a liar,” yelled one attendee.

Despite receiving praise from the student for her insightful questions regarding school restructuring, Irvin’s video comments drew criticism, and one woman humorously noted, “That’s true!” Another shouted, “Don’t mess with the girls,” as reported by The Nashville Tennessean.

In the charged atmosphere of the meeting, Irvin maintained he did not mean to offend anyone, but was still called upon to take responsibility for his words. “There was no disrespect meant. I apologize to her and her family,” he added, looking confused.

A woman in the audience insisted that had the situation involved male students, Irvin’s conduct would have been different. “If it had been the boy next to you, you wouldn’t have done that,” she stated, highlighting a larger conversation about respect and boundaries.

Some board members demanded Irvin’s resignation, unanimously condemning his actions. “We believe it is in the best interest of the board, students, and community for Mr. Irvin to take responsibility for his actions and resign from his position,” said board member Whitney Riddle.

This incident marks another chapter in Irvin’s controversial history, coming over 15 years after previous disciplinary actions against him.

Irvin’s inappropriate gesture occurred in front of 15 students and two teachers at David Crockett High School, where students earn $8 an hour. According to court documents, one student appeared visibly upset by his actions.

He acknowledged making the gesture and has been ordered to keep his distance from school facilities. Additionally, he faces allegations of using profanity around students.

Irvin remarked that he thought he was trying to connect with the students and regretted participating in a way that led to misunderstanding.
