Terrifying last moments of Humboldt County mother discovered stuck in a 20-foot well

Mother Found Dead in Well in Northern California

Authorities reported that a mother was discovered dead in a well that was 20 feet deep in rural Northern California. The incident occurred on June 17, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Brittney Willison, 35, from Garberville, was house-sitting for a friend when she fell into the well the night before. This all unfolded while the friend was checking on the home’s water system. She apparently was trapped for over 12 hours before emergency responders made the grim discovery.

The sheriff’s office determined her death was an accident, attributing it to “acute asphyxial brain injury due to well submersion due to physical and mechanical confinement in the well.”

While the investigation has wrapped up, the toxicology report is still pending.

A close friend of Willison mentioned that she had run out of water while looking after the house. “She was a very independent and strong woman,” the friend noted, suggesting that Willison went to the well to address the issue herself.

Rescue workers reported that there was no oxygen in the well, leaving little time for any intervention.

Willison was described as a “devoted mother” and an active member of her community. A friend recounted her kindness and love for children, saying she had a nurturing spirit, always taking care of plants and flowers, and inspiring those around her to appreciate life.

Willison had a position at a local clothing store called Bootleg near Garberville. She attended Southfork High School in nearby Miranda and often shared her passion for hiking, including photos from the well-known Lost Coast Trail.

A candlelight vigil was held on June 24, where her family expressed gratitude for the support they received during this tragic time. A memorial service is planned for July 26 to celebrate her life and honor her memory.
