Tesla is recalling over 218,000 vehicles due to a lag in rearview camera images, which could elevate the chances of accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated on Wednesday.
This recall impacts 218,868 Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X cars.
The affected models span from the 2021 to 2023 Tesla Model Y and Model 3, as well as Model S and Model X from 2021 and 2022.
Affected vehicles utilize hardware version 3, which Tesla phased out in January 2024.
NHTSA noted that the display from a car’s rearview camera might experience a delay when the vehicle shifts into reverse, which could hinder the driver’s visibility.
“The delay in rearview camera images can affect the driver’s ability to see behind them, raising the risk of a collision,” the NHTSA indicated in its notice. “Drivers are urged to check the roadside or rely on their mirrors while reversing.”
Although Tesla reported no accidents, fatalities, or injuries tied to this camera issue, there have been 27 warranty claims and two relevant field reports.
The company plans to provide free over-the-air software updates to customers, addressing the flawed software version 2026.8.6 with an updated version, 2026.8.6.1.
Tesla mentioned that more than 99.92% of the affected vehicles have successfully received the repair firmware.
In related news, the NHTSA recently concluded an investigation into approximately 2.6 million Tesla vehicles concerning a feature that permits remote movement of the cars, determining that the risks involved were limited to minor accidents.
