Tesla Semi battery fire in California rages at 1,000 degrees, spews toxic fumes, shuts down interstate

Tesla trailer hits vehicle North California Officials said the battery ignited on Monday, sparking a raging fire and releasing toxic fumes, creating a hazardous materials incident.

Interstate 80 was closed in both directions near Colfax around 3:15 a.m. Monday after a Tesla heavy-duty electric truck crashed into a tree on the shoulder of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Authorities said the driver of the large tractor-trailer walked away from the scene of the accident and was taken to a hospital.

The Tesla’s batteries burned at about 1,000 degrees, and firefighters used “thousands of gallons” of water to cool the wreckage, said Officer Jason Lyman of the California Highway Patrol (CHP). He told KCRA-TV.

Lyman said firefighters eventually had to wait for the lithium-ion batteries to die and burn out, and for them to cool to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. He also said that the toxic fumes released by the batteries can be dangerous if inhaled.
