Texas A&M baseball coach’s vow to stay with school goes viral as reports say he’s leaving for rival

The Texas A&M Aggies lost 6-5 to Tennessee on Monday night in a deciding Game 3 of the College World Series.

It was the Vols’ first baseball title, and after the game, Aggies head coach Jim Schlossnagle said he left College Station “never going to take another job again.”

Asked about rumors of “specific job openings” following the defeat, Schlossnagle told reporters it was “selfish” to ask about it.

“I left my family to coach at Texas A&M. I took the Texas A&M job because I never intended to take another job again. That feeling hasn’t changed. It’s not fair to say that…” Schlossnagle said. “I understand you have to ask, but I sacrificed a big part of my life to get this job, I poured my whole soul into this job, I gave everything I could to this job. Write it like that.”

Now, less than 24 hours after that feeling, 247 Sports ESPN then reported that Schlossnagel was, in fact, working another job.

But the report isn’t just about work — it’s about the school’s in-state rival, the Texas Longhorns.

Of course, Monday night’s tough answers are now understandably the talk of the town.

“The first thing Jim Schlossnagle needs to do is call Texas Ag reporter Richard Zane and apologize for insulting him with a question about the Longhorns’ position after the loss. Schlossnagle will never be trusted outside of Austin again,” NFL reporter John McClain wrote on X.

“If Jim Schlossnagle leaves the Aggies for the Longhorns after his postgame performance berating a reporter for asking a question he was compelled to ask, he will have no credibility for the rest of his career and will be branded a liar by many.”

“There’s no bigger lie than a college coach being asked about job availability,” SportsGrid host Ben Stevens said.

Schlossnagle joined A&M in 2021 after 18 seasons at TCU and previously spent two years at UNLV.

Schlossnagel reportedly cited his relationship with Longhorns athletic director and former A&M athletic director Chris Del Conte as the reason for his decision. He reportedly met with players early Tuesday morning and told them a decision had to be made.

This is Schlossnagel’s eighth trip to Omaha and his second with the Aggies, who finished this year with a 53-15 record, Schlossnagel’s most wins in a season.

He will reportedly bring his coaching staff to Austin. Texas joins the SEC next Monday, meaning the teams will be conference rivals going forward.
