Texas A&M President to Resign After Controversy

Mark Wales, the president of Texas A&M University, is set to resign on Friday following controversy surrounding lessons on gender identity, as announced by the Texas A&M University System on Thursday.

Wales, a former Air Force pilot and co-director, faced backlash after a video surfaced in which a student confronted professor Melissa McCall regarding the gender topics in a children’s literature class.

The video, which gained significant attention online, was shared by State Sen. Brian Harrison (R) on September 8. This incident led to McCall’s dismissal a few days later, along with the removal of two other administrators. However, these actions did not appease some lawmakers, including Lt. Gen. Dampatrick (R), who criticized Wales for his handling of the matter.

“President Welsh has been a dedicated leader for Texas A&M,” stated Prime Minister Glenn Heger. “We appreciate his service and contributions. This is, perhaps, the right time to set Texas A&M up for future success.”

The Regents Committee of the university will conduct a nationwide search for a new president while appointing an interim leader to ensure a smooth transition.

Earlier this year, Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened to fire Wales, accusing the university of breaching the state’s ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. While Abbott doesn’t have the authority to directly fire Wales, he has the power to appoint a board that can.

“The impact of General Welsh’s leadership is something that will always be remembered by Aggies. The Regent Committee is committed to making sure this transition strengthens the university’s mission and values,” remarked Robert Alburitt, the chairman, on Thursday.

Wales’s resignation adds him to a list of university presidents stepping down this year amid controversy. Earlier this month, Northwestern University’s President Michael Sil announced his resignation following tensions between the administration and student protests against the Trump administration. Additionally, Columbia University’s interim president resigned in May due to conflicts over federal funding and the administration’s response to Palestinian protests.
