Texas and 14 Other States File Suit to Remove NFA Registration Requirements

Texas Joins Lawsuit Against NFA Registration Requirement

Texas, along with 14 other states, has launched a significant lawsuit aiming to eliminate the registration requirement of the National Firearms Act (NFA).

According to a report from July 7, 2025, the lawsuit was initiated by American gun owners, including organizations like the Silencer Shop Foundation, Arsenal of the Province of Palmetto, Silencerco Weapons Research, LLC, and the Gun Owners Foundation.

This lawsuit follows the passage of a major bill by both the US House and Senate under President Trump’s leadership, which reduced the NFA tax stamps from $200 to zero. However, the bill still maintained the registration requirement for firearm suppressors. Law-abiding citizens who wish to purchase these devices can now avoid the $200 tax, yet they still face requirements such as fingerprinting, photography, background checks, and registration with the ATF.

On Sunday, American gun owners announced via X that Texas and the other participating states are part of this lawsuit, which they believe will address the perceived overreach of the NFA.

A report from Newsweek states that plaintiffs, including [Gun Owners of America], argue that the Supreme Court upheld the NFA as tax law, referring to it as “one big beautiful case.” They claim that with the tax being abolished, the constitutional justification for the law is no longer relevant.

Gore has stated that the requirement to register under the NFA infringes upon the Second Amendment and represents an unconstitutional overreach of federal authority. In a press release dated July 3, 2025, he indicated that as Congress has significantly altered the tax mechanism, future legal actions will aim to dismantle more of this outdated law.
