Texas Attorney General Looking Into Organization Allegedly Funding Texas Democrats Who Left the State

Texas AG Investigates Group Linked to Senate Walkout

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an investigation into an organization named Powered by People, which he describes as a “radical” group affiliated with Beto O’Rourke.

The investigation reportedly focuses on allegations of an illegal financial scheme intended to bribe Democrats who fled Texas, thus disrupting the legislative quorum. According to the AG’s office, “the individuals involved were major funders for House Democrats who left their offices, potentially violating the Bribery Act by supporting those breaking away from the state.”

In a recent statement, Paxton emphasized that anyone accepting bribes from O’Rourke’s group would be held accountable. He noted, “Texas cannot be bought. We are committed to thoroughly reviewing all documents and communications gathered during this investigation. These individuals have already eroded public trust by abandoning their responsibilities.”

Additionally, reports suggest that Powered by People has been crucial in financing the activities of Texas Democrats who opted out of their duties. This arrangement could extend beyond mere bribery violations, possibly infringing on other Texas laws pertaining to campaign financing and ethical conduct.

To advance the investigation, Paxton has requested documentation and communications from various groups concerning their involvement in this alleged conspiracy to disrupt the legislative process.

In another development, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken legal action in the state’s Supreme Court, aiming to fill the legislative seats vacated by those Democrats who have fled. He declared on social media, “I have implemented emergency measures to begin the removal of those Democrats who refuse to engage in special sessions.” Abbott is directly addressing the Supreme Court to clarify his authority for this lawsuit, citing constitutional grounds to support his actions.

The Supreme Court has marked the case as urgent, asking for a response from the relevant parties by the afternoon of August 8th.
