Democratic Candidate Arrested at Texas Capitol Hearing

A democratic congressional candidate was removed from the Texas State Capitol on Thursday and subsequently arrested during a hearing regarding a rezoning issue in Texas.

“That’s a shame. It’s a horrible thing. For what you have…” Isaiah Martin exclaimed as he was forcibly taken out of a House Constituency Committee meeting in Austin.

Martin is vying to replace the late Senator Sylvester Turner (D-Texas), who passed away while representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District on March 5th.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that Martin was arrested for allegedly trespassing and was booked at the Travis County Jail, facing further charges related to disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Local outlet KVUE covered the incident.

All charges against Martin were dropped the following day, and, according to his brother, he was expected to be released from custody. Social media posts from his supporters suggest that the state is attempting to set an “example” with Martin.

Republican state legislator Cody Vassatt directed the sergeant to remove Martin after he refused to adhere to speaking limits, even when his microphone was turned off.

It reportedly took three men to escort Martin out of the room.

“Yes! Get off of him!” a woman in the audience shouted as Martin fell to the ground with a sergeant on top of him.

“He stumbled,” one security member reassured the onlookers.

“America will stand up against you!” Martin yelled as he was dragged into the hallway.

Martin’s brothers claim he was merely exercising his First Amendment rights and would have cooperated with the officer had he been approached differently.

“He shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place,” Martin’s brother stated.

Previously, Martin worked as a staff member for the late Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and is one of eight Democrats currently running in a special election in the Houston Regional Capitol District.

He opposes the Republican-led initiatives to alter Texas’s congressional map through court measures. The proposed rezoning could potentially create five new congressional seats for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
