Texas Democrat describes FBI’s tactics as characteristic of a failing government.

Texas Democrat calls use of FBI 'tactic of a collapsing regime'

A Texas Democrat has recently voiced concerns after fleeing the state amidst the Republican push for a more favorable electoral map, expressing discontent over the FBI’s involvement.

“The Governor of Texas has issued threats against our elected officials. The Texas Attorney General has urged us to be ‘hunted.’ Now, the FBI director, appointed by Donald Trump, seems to be following through,” Rep. John Bucy III remarked in a statement on Thursday.

“Let’s not mince words. The use of federal law enforcement to monitor political adversaries resembles tactics from a failing administration,” he added. “It’s a bit of authoritarian overreach that we typically criticize in other nations. And now, it’s happening right here.”

In response to this situation, Democratic Caucus Chairman of the Texas House, Jean Wu, echoed Bucy’s sentiment by daring the FBI to “come and take it.”

Meanwhile, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) mentioned that the FBI had approved his request for assistance in locating Texas Democrats who obstructed the passing of the Republican-friendly map.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) confirmed that both the FBI and the Texas Department of Public Safety were “tracking” these Democrats.

The FBI has refrained from commenting on this situation, leaving unclear what agreements have been made and the rationale behind the agency’s actions.

Experts consulted by The Hill expressed doubt regarding the FBI’s jurisdiction in this matter. Richard Painter, former deputy counsel to President George W. Bush, stated, “I’m not sure why the FBI is involved. This is a Texas political issue, not something the FBI should be enforcing.”

Texas Rep. Anne Johnson (D) also criticized the move, labeling it an “authoritarian tactic” in her statement.

“I won’t be silenced by politicians aiming to control our democracy. If I am in opposition to authoritarianism, I will insist on facing it directly,” she asserted.
