Texas Lawmaker Reacts to Supreme Court’s Redistricting Decision
Texas Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett expressed her frustration in a heated video after the Supreme Court decided not to intervene in the state’s newly proposed congressional redistricting map. This map is projected to provide Republicans with as many as five additional seats in the House for the 2026 elections. Crockett, who had previously campaigned for the U.S. Senate while also running in newly drawn districts, accused former President Donald Trump and the GOP of “rigging the system” ahead of the midterms.
In a YouTube post, Crockett asserted that the Republicans manipulated the legislative process and the governor’s office to gain an unfair advantage. “There’s no doubt that Trump is collaborating with the state legislature and the governor’s mansion to skew the rules,” she declared. She also commended states like Indiana and California for resisting Trump’s agenda, saying, “Kudos to them for standing up.”
Crockett’s remarks also targeted the Supreme Court, which upheld a ruling by Governor Greg Abbott’s office about the redistricting. She commented, “It’s absurd that they take such actions,” nodding to the lengthy opinion written by District Court Judge Jeffrey V. Brown. This seemed to be an attempt to commend the judge while confusing his role.
Legal expert Lana Shadwick discussed Brown’s opinion, outlining that he halted the implementation of the Texas 2025 map. His ruling indicated that the redistricting plan was racially gerrymandered and thus breached the Equal Protection Clause, complicating Republican plans for the 2026 elections.
Moreover, Judge Smith critiqued Brown’s approach, highlighting a lack of consultation with senior judges and claiming Brown rushed to publish his opinion without adequate opportunity for feedback.
The Supreme Court’s ruling means Texas’s new congressional maps are set to remain until the next election cycle, significantly boosting Republican strength while forcing Crockett out of her existing district, leading her to swiftly begin her Senate campaign. Reports also noted that Colin Allred, a Democratic Senate candidate, chose to switch back to running for Congress.
Meanwhile, Democrats in other states are also taking bold moves with redistricting. Governor Gavin Newsom in California has advanced a ballot initiative for new Democratic-leaning seats, while a proposed expansion in Indiana was turned down by the Republican-dominated Senate.
Crockett took the chance to advocate for broader reforms within the justice system, referencing the work of the 2024 Court Reform Now Task Force. She called for term limits and other changes, arguing that strengthening democracy starts with better checks and balances, particularly within the Supreme Court.
