Texas Governor Greg Abbott urges removal of CAIR's non-profit status

Abbott Calls for CAIR to Lose Nonprofit Status

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has requested the state’s attorney general take action against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), aiming to revoke its nonprofit designation. This request was outlined in a letter directed to Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is also asked to ensure CAIR and its affiliates cease operations in Texas.

Abbott emphasized the attorney general’s role in regulating nonprofits that may be violating state laws, pushing for swift action. Meanwhile, Paxton’s office is reportedly investigating two school districts connected to the Islamic Games of North America, an organization that collaborates with CAIR.

“Islamic extremism has no place in Texas, and any relationship with organizations linked to foreign terrorist organizations must end,” Paxton stated, asserting that taxpayer money should not support activities against Texas law.

Abbott has previously urged school districts to cut ties with CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood, indicating that CAIR’s presence on school grounds may not align with legal standards.

“Documents reveal a clear threat from the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR,” Abbott said. “Regardless of CAIR’s public image, it cannot use its nonprofit status as protection to engage in or support terrorism.” He added that other organizations that masquerade as charitable while supporting terrorism should also be scrutinized.

In response, CAIR has refuted the claims made by Abbott’s administration, calling the governor “desperate.” A spokesperson for CAIR accused Abbott of attempting to stifle criticism related to U.S. financial support for Israel.

While CAIR’s attorneys prepare to contest Abbott’s declaration in court, the organization insists it will uphold free speech and civil rights for all Texans. They also revealed intentions to legally challenge Abbott’s statements.

This development follows a previous request by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith for an IRS investigation into CAIR’s California branch, citing alleged misuse of taxpayer funds and potential legal violations.

Smith pointed out that tax-exempt status is a privilege, not an entitlement. Organizations embracing special tax treatment must adhere to laws and commit to the public good, not engage in or fund illegal activities.
