Texas Governor Orders Security for Protests
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has activated the National Guard and DPS tactical units to secure the Capitol in Austin, driven by concerns regarding Antifa-related groups and possible unrest during the upcoming “No Kings Day” protests. These demonstrations are part of a broader national campaign opposing President Trump’s policies, which have faced criticism amid an ongoing government shutdown.
The protests are set to occur in nearly 100 cities, as reported across Texas. Organized by the 50501 movement, events are scheduled in 2,500 cities nationwide. Previous similar protests have seen infiltration by rival Antifa groups, prompting Abbott to enhance security measures.
“Violence and destruction will never be accepted in Texas,” Governor Abbott stated. He has instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to deploy law enforcement personnel and resources to ensure the safety of those in Austin. The state aims to deter criminal activity and collaborate with local authorities to address violence and property damage.
The focus of the DPS and National Guard deployment will be on Austin and the Texas State Capitol. According to the governor’s office, there will be increased law enforcement presence to “maintain law and order,” alongside the existing thousands of DPS troopers across the state. The operation will be backed by aircraft and “other tactical assets,” officials noted.
The newly formed Office of Homeland Security within the DPS will oversee protests in Austin and throughout Texas to help deter or prevent violence. The governor’s office mentioned that DPS will investigate ties to known terrorist organizations and take action against those involved in unlawful activities.
